The Fire Department is rated an ISO Class 1 department showing the dedication, training, equipment, and progress we have made to ensure the citizens of El Paso have the best department possible.

The Public Education unit trains citizens in fire safety and how to use fire extinguishers. If inspectors find a hazard the owner or occupant is required to fix them to meet the requirements of the safety code. All businesses are inspected for fire hazards annually. The inspectors of the Fire Prevention Division help ensure that the building and fire codes are followed. The Fire Department utilizes resources from the community to limit the number of emergencies that occur. When an emergency event occurs the role of the Fire Department is to arrive on the scene as quickly and safely as possible in order to provide assistance. The department provides mutual aid to Fort Bliss Military Base and the County of El Paso under the terms of the Mutual Aid Agreements. Specialized teams respond to water, mountain, and technical rescues. We respond to all calls involving fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials, and other emergency events in the City of El Paso. 1895: The board of commissioners was replaced with one Fire Commissioner after a Roxbury fire destroyed 216 buildings.The El Paso Fire Department is a full-service fire department.Outside help rushed to the scene and two firemen were killed in the fire. 1889: The Thanksgiving Day fire set off eight alarms.1883: First aid kits were given to all fire companies.We also installed private fire alarm boxes in schools, stores, and other public buildings. 1882: Firehouses began using electric gongs for alarms.1881: The department installed sliding poles in the firehouses, and added bunks to several stations for faster response times.1877: We replaced regular ladders with new Bangor extension ladders.All fire engines were equipped with relief valves and shutoff nozzles. 1876: The department started using the aerial ladder.The telephone was invented the following year. We installed dial lines so different parts of the department could communicate. 1875: We changed the locks on fire alarm boxes to stop false alarms, and created the first fire department repair shop.Many of the department’s companies also got fully staffed with permanent firefighters. 1874: We elected a permanent district chief.1873: The department got its first steam engine fireboat.This led to the creation of a permanent board of fire commissioners. 1872: The Great Boston Fire of 1872 destroyed 776 buildings, costing $75 million and killing 13 people. 1871: We started using a new 11-inch fire hose.1863: We started using adjustable fog nozzles.1859: Steam engines replaced hand engines, and we began hiring permanent crew.1851: We installed the first public fire alarm system through telegraph and an office at Boston City Hall.1837: The City created the Fire Department as you know it now.
